International Day of women and girls in science

Yesterday it was the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, proclaimed by the United Nation General Assembly in 2015. The day is aimed at achieving full and equal access to women and girls and their participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, training and research activities at all levels. More in general, the purpose is to reach gender equality and empowerment for women and girls, having reaffirmed that they play a vital role in achieving sustainable development and their full and effective participation in sustainable development policies, programmes and decision-making must therefore be ensured.

According to a study, reported by UN and conducted in 14 countries, “the probability for female students of graduating with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree in science-related fields are 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the percentages of male students are 37%, 18% and 6%”.

Therefore, the transformation of our world, which is the target of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, of which yesterday initiative is part, seems to be nowadays still far. The project is quite ambitious: all adhering countries agree to mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The same principles are the ones that - since the beginning of its activity and up to today - inspire and drive the definition and implementation of People strategies in Bernoni Grant Thornton. In 1961 this meant for the founding Partner to start a professional activity with a female Partner. Today this mean to operate, also leveraging on new technologies, for granting a sustainable work/life balance to young women and women.
